![]() ![]() She recently wrote a letter to Governor Pete Ricketts. Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert says she wouldn't mind a special session to get this issue figured out. "That's something we're going to have to keep an eye on." "I think the uncertainty isn't as bad as some people might think." McCollister thinks at some point all 50 states will have some kind of Internet sales tax. ![]() "Coming into the busy Christmas season, you're looking at perhaps four or five million dollars that would flow into the state coffers and also the various cities that levy sales taxes as well." McCollister is one state senator pushing for a special session. "It's big money," said John McCollister, a Nebraska state senator. "There are some companies here that have to be freaking out because that's going to be a huge competitive disadvantage for them."Ī big question now is whether or not there should be a special session called to get this issue figured out. Kavan told FOX 42 News Wednesday he believes the decision won't do any favors for mom and pop shops. "It's a tax, so it's actually going to cost me money to collect sales tax on online sales." Current law already requires brick-and-mortar stores to collect state and local sales taxes. The court ruling in June paves the way for Nebraska to begin collecting sales taxes already owed on online purchases. As it stands there have to be tens of thousands of players being ripped off already in PA alone."It's going to be kind of annoying," said Kavan, a business owner in Omaha. This is obviously happening on a massive scale and it's illegal to charge additional sales tax in PA.Īny other players in states with varying rates that want to check their purchase history to make sure they are getting charged the proper tax rate? This could be massive if it's happening in other states also. I said if they can't answer that then I need to have my ticket escalated. So far they have been very dismissive about a possible bug in their software, so I asked them one final time for the reasoning why the rate changed if the rates in PA have not. I have repeatedly asked them for the reason they are charging more when I don't live in Philadelphia and they just keep telling me to contact my "state tax authority". My previous 3 purchases that I checked are all at the proper 6%. Steam is trying to act like this is a change PA made, but it's obviously in their software. I contacted Steam Support and they said that I need to contact the PA Department of Revenue, but the Sales, Use and Hotel Occupancy Tax page clearly states the tax rates and the dates they have been changed. I thought the price looked weird and did the math and they are charging 8% when I don't live in Philadelphia either. I just noticed this on a purchase I made this weekend. I also provide screenshots of my checkout cart showing the increased tax for some items. I have already contacted steam about this and am currently waiting for a response about it. I looked into it and couldn't find anything on the subject regarding sales tax. It could be that something changed in my state that I wasn't informed about, and if that is the case, I would greatly appreciate the information. I am curious to see if other people in other states are having this issue or if it is isolated to just Pennsylvania. I have read the Steam Subscriber Agreement and it doesn't say anything about being charged more than your state and local tax, which like I said before, where I live it is only 6%. I noticed this on June 2nd that Steam started charging 8% sales tax on purchases because I have a purchase made on May 30th where I was charged 6% on the purchase. The issue is that Steam is charging 8% sales tax currently on game purchases. For some background, I currently living in Pennsylvania and where I live the sales tax for purchases is 6%, even for digital purchases. I currently seem to be running into an issue across steam with purchases regarding the sales tax.
